Join us on Sunday, April 14th for a screening of the classic 1954 film “A Star is Born” starring Judy Garland and the 1917 short film “The Immigrant” starring Charlie Chaplin as part of the 2019 “Better on the Big Screen” Classic Movie Series sponsored by Williams Eye Works and BoroughFive Pictures.
Prior to “A Star is Born”, and in celebration of Immigrant Heritage Week, The St. George Library of The New York Public Library is collaborating with the St. George Theatre and Staten Island Arts to screen the silent film, “The Immigrant” starring Charlie Chaplin. A silent romantic comedy short film, Charlie Chaplin plays an immigrant coming to New York who falls in love with a beautiful young woman along the way.
Doors open at 5:00 PM and a special screening of “The Immigrant” will take place at 5:45 PM. Together all three organizations will be bringing the full experience of silent film to Staten Island as the screening of “The Immigrant” will be accompanied by live music. Dr. Howard Fox has composed an original score for the film which will be performed by organist Ed Morand. Live music for this event is made possible due to the generosity of Staten Island Arts.
Thanks to a generous donation from the St. George Theatre, limited tickets will be made available at the St. George Library at 5 Central Avenue, Staten Island, NY. Individuals with a valid New York Public Library library card can receive one free ticket to attend the screening. The ticket is valid for the screening of The Immigrant and “A Star is Born” starring Judy Garland. Tickets are available now. Tickets are on a first come, first served basis and is limited in quantity.
If you missed the opportunity to obtain a free ticket, individuals with a New York Public Library library card can also purchase tickets at the St. George Theatre box office at a discounted price of $10.00.

About A Star is Born:
Starring Judy Garland and James Mason, the movie follows a film star who helps a young singer and actress find fame, even as age and alcoholism sends his own career on a downward spiral. The 1954 version starring Judy Garland is the second of the four different versions of A Star is Born – the original 1937 version starring Janet Gaynor, the 1976 version starring Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson, and the recent 2018 remake starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper.
