Learn More About UsDesigned by architect Eugene DeRosa with interiors by Nestor Castro, the St. George Theatre opened as Staten Island’s grandest movie and vaudeville house. It featured a $25,000 Wurlitzer organ, an advanced cooling and heating system, and one of the largest cantilevered balconies ever built. The theatre quickly became a premier entertainment destination.
On December 4, 1929, the first movie to play was “So This Is College” and the headline “live” act was the husband-and-wife team of Blossom Seeley and Benny Fields. The movie and vaudeville format featured performers such as Al Jolson, Kate Smith and Guy Lombardo. The live performances ended in 1934 but began again during the 1940’s when shows promoting the sale of war bonds featured personalities such as Rose Marie and Arthur Godfrey.
Original owner Solomon Brill sold his interest in the theatre to Joseph Kohn in 1932. By 1938, the venue was acquired by the Fabian Theatre chain, which continued to operate it as a movie palace. Vaudeville performances ended in 1934 as film became the dominant attraction. The St. George Theatre became one of Staten Island’s most popular cinemas, showcasing major Hollywood films for nearly four decades.
Employees of Proctor & Gamble (P&G) staged shows at the St. George Theatre in the 1940’s for the purpose of promoting their products and fostering goodwill with the community, particularly during the theater’s early years.
During the 1940s and 1950s, Procter & Gamble, a major consumer goods company, employed usherettes at various theaters, including the St. George Theatre.
Following its closure as a movie house in 1977, the theatre underwent several unsuccessful transformations, including stints as a roller rink, an antique showroom, and a nightclub. A brief attempt was made in the mid-1990s to reopen it as a performing arts center, but it ultimately failed.
Facing demolition, the St. George Theatre was saved by dance educator Mrs. Rosemary Cappozalo and her daughters, Doreen Cugno and Luanne Sorrentino who formed a non-profit organization, the St. George Theatre Restoration Inc. With the support from the community, business leaders, and elected officials, the theatre was transformed into a thriving performing arts center.
Senator John Marchi first attended the grand opening of the St. George Theatre in 1929 as a child, and 76 years later, he had the honor of celebrating on stage at the venue’s Gala Celebration with his wife, Mrs. Marchi, the Co-Founders and Board members Brian Laline and Fred Cerullo.
Over the years, the St. George Theatre has undergone several renovations, and by 2023, the interior was magnificently restored. After a five-month closure, the intricate plaster work, grand murals, chandeliers, and stunning dome were brought back to their former glory. The theater is now beautifully preserved, ensuring its splendor will be enjoyed by generations of theatergoers for the next century.
